Stress–whether it affects students grappling with issues at home or dealing with college-application pressures–can stand in the way of student learning. Wellness, mindfulness and social-emotional learning – an approach in which schools teach such skills as empathy building and communication – have become part of the daily routine in some districts, where they are cultivating students’ and teachers’ inner lives to grow a healthy environment for teaching and learning.
